I’ve been given a lot of titles in my writing career. (Most were positive.) It shows how much power words can have over your perception, doesn’t it?

I spent my first few professional years in IT, working as an administrator for several companies. All the while I was called on for a lot of writing - something I’ve loved since childhood. And not just technical writing, either - I wrote newsletters, sales tips, web content, product descriptions, etc.

Then I found out my talent for putting complex information in an easy-to-understand format wasn’t as widespread as I thought! What seemed to come naturally to me utterly baffled co-workers. So in 2002, after the dot-com bubble popped and threw us all for a loop, I decided it was time for something new.

And thus Blue Ferret Communications was born.

I started out as a generalist, every-industry, I-do-it-all copywriter. That got old fast. After a short time I realized I was a lot better at certain types of writing than others. I stink at hard-selling ad copy, for example. But I’m stellar at website copy.

Then an interesting thing happened. The more I narrowed my preferred client type, and what projects I would take on, the higher the project’s quality was. People began to understand the value of what I do. They started seeing different ways to market, different ways to talk WITH audiences (instead of at them). Maybe that’s why you’re here.

What Does “Blue Ferret Communications” Mean Anyway?

Well, I assembled it. Seriously.

‘Communications’ comes from what I do - provide communication in the forms of web copy, SEO and consultation. The ‘Blue’ came from a chart I found online which showed the subconscious perceptions people have to colors in business. Red, for example, conveys passion. A fiery interest in a given topic. Blue, my choice, conveys professionalism and good communications skills. (Makes sense, right?)

I stuck the ‘Ferret’ in there because I like ferrets. And it allowed me to make a unique mascot - who gets more email than I do!

About Boo

This is Boo the Blue Ferret, my company mascot. He does some of our PR work, and occasionally tags along for networking events or speeches. He might pop up now and then on the site too, so don’t be surprised if you see him.

I like to think of Boo as an example of how well graphics and communication go together on the Web. Boo’s great for an icebreaker–lots of people notice a blue ferret. Then I can explain his purpose, and mine. A “graphic” lured people in, and communication resulted. We work pretty well together.
